What That AC Smell Means
Different odors signal different problems.
Musty or moldy
The most common in humid Florida — mold or mildew growing on the coil, in the drain pan, or in ductwork. A common fix is coil cleaning, drain clearing, and sometimes UV air purification.
Burning or electrical
Turn the system off immediately. This can signal an overheating motor or wiring issue and needs prompt professional attention.
Rotten eggs
Could indicate a dead animal in the ductwork or, rarely, a gas issue — worth a professional inspection.
Dirty sock smell
Bacterial buildup on the evaporator coil, often after switching between heating and cooling.
