Preparing Your HVAC for Hurricane Season on the Space Coast
2026-06-22 5 min readBy Launch Air & Heating

Living on the Space Coast means storm season is a reality. Protect your HVAC system before, during, and after a hurricane.
Protect Your HVAC This Storm Season
Here on the Space Coast, hurricane prep should include your air conditioner.
Before the storm
- Turn your AC off at the thermostat and breaker if a direct hit or flooding is expected
- Cover or secure the outdoor unit against flying debris (don't wrap it long-term — trapped moisture causes corrosion)
- Consider a surge protector to guard against power-surge damage
During the storm
Keep the system off if the power is unstable. Repeated surges and brownouts can damage the compressor and controls.
After the storm
- Don't run a unit that was flooded — have it inspected first
- Check the outdoor unit for debris and damage
- Turn power back on and restart only once you've confirmed it's safe
